Amanda Brugel
Pointe Claire in Montreal's West Island is a small, little town that is a bit sleepy. This West Island, to those who have never heard of it, is a vast area that extends from Lachine to the west. Amanda Brugel's birthplace is frequently mentioned, but her brief time in the city was not. Brugel was an aspiring young lady living in Courtice Ontario just outside Oshawa. In her early years she wanted to be a performer but an unexpected growth spurt made it impossible. In an interview with Toronto Star, she confessed that "In heels I am 6 feet 1 inches." When I surpassed the size of my male companion, I stopped. A lot of dancers go from dancing to acting. For the Brugel family, it was their drama teacher who nudged her to go in this direction. She was encouraged to try out for roles in her school's production. She auditioned and ended up playing the leading role in Anne of Green Gables. It led to a Fine Arts Talent Scholarship at York University where she attended the Theatre Program and earned an Associate in Fine Arts degree in 2000. Since then, Brugel has been performing in over 60 plays, smaller and large. One of the most memorable was the time she was cast as Rita on The Handmaid's Tale. Brugel, the only Canadian in the season 1 actors of the series and only seen occasionally was the only Canadian.
